Barge Aground Off Sheboygan

A barge broke free and went aground on Lake Michigan off the south breakwater at Sheboygan, Wisconsin.  The barge was  being pushed by the 108 meter long tugboat Donald C when heavy seas and strong winds separated the two vessels.  The Donald C was unable to regain control of the barge before it went ashore.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The barge is to be inspected and refloated later.  The barge was carrying a cargo of rocks bound for Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

The 60 foot tour boat Picture Rocks with 61 passengers became disabled while sailing near Empire, Michigan.   A wave struck the tour boat smashing a window and shorting out the electronics.   The vessel contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched a helicopter to the scene.  With their assistance, the vessel was beached and passengers waded ashore.   Two passengers had to be airlifted to safety after sustaining a shoulder injury.     No reports of pollution.   At the time of the incident, there were waves 2 to 4 feet in height.

The 1000 foot freighter Indiana Harbor ran aground at the entrance to the Muskegon Channel which connects Lake Michigan with Muskegon Lake. The vessel was carrying coal to Muskegon, Michigan when it encountered shoals. The Indiana Harbor was able to be freed later the same day after unloading some cargo to a sister ship. The Reports state high winds caused sand to be push into the channel creating a sandbar.
