The 65 foot long fishing vessel Challenge sank at New Bedford, Massachusetts. The vessel had sunk by the stern during the early morning hours releasing diesel fuel and lube oil into the water. A tugboat alerted authorities of the sunken fishing vessel and the pollution release.  Authorities placed booms around the Challenge and used absorbent pads to collect as much pollution as possible within the booms. Reports state the diesel slick reached some 1.5 miles into Fairhaven.  No reports of injuries.

On August 20, the 37 foot long passenger ship King Eider became disabled in Brace Cove near Gloucester, Massachusetts. The King Eider was cruising with 34 passengers when the passenger ship sprung a leak. The King Eider sent out a distress call with a nearby fishing vessel, Coast Guard lifeboat and other vessels from local authorities responding. The fishing vessel Lisa & Jake arrived on the scene first and took the passenger ship under tow while pumps on board the King Eider brought the flooding under control. The Coast Guard lifeboat arrived a short time later and assisted with additional dewatering pumps. The vessels proceeded into Gloucester where all the passengers disembarked. No reports of injuries or pollution released. The cause of the flooding was not reported.

The 67 foot long fishing vessel Hope & Sydney ran aground near Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The trawler had run aground in Wood Hole Pass with 2500 pounds of squid on board. The crew requested assistance and the Coast Guard dispatched by a 45 foot rescue boat to the scene. The Coast Guard monitored the situation until the Hope & Sydney was able to refloat itself on the rising tide. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Reports state the fishing vessel returned to Point Judith, RI.
