Ginga Lost

The fishing vessel Ginga was reported lost in a severe storm in the La Perfuse Strait near the Sakhalin Island, Russia.  The vessel with eight crew on board had sent out a distress call requesting assistance.   Several rescue vessels and aircraft from Russia and Japan conducted a search and rescue operation.   Three bodies of the crew was located and recovered.   The remaining five crewmen remain missing.  Rescue vessels reported they found remains of the vessel near Cape Crillon.   Weather reports showed winds reached 50 km per hour where the Ginga was last reported.  Several news sources stated the Ginga had several safety violations and the master of the vessel had been detained for illegal fishing.

Lakshadweep Sea

Two vessels encountered bad weather near Amini Island while sailing Lakshadweep Sea.  The 160 ton Al Akther had just unloaded a cargo of produce on Amini Island when it departed to pick up cargo from another island.  The Al Akther had six crewmen on board when it was reported missing.   No trace of the vessel has been found while rescue boats look for survivors.   Another vessel, the Al Faisal, was also sailing in the area near the Al Akther.   The Al Faisal got caught in the same rough seas and was able to keep the vessel from capsizing by tossing overboard most of its cargo.  Reports state the crew of the Al Faisal were later rescued.

Kapitan Kuznetsov Presume Lost, Found Safe

The 85 meter long, 920 dwt freighter Kapitan Kuznetsov was reported missing and was pressumed lost in the Barents Sea near (68 08N 042 30E).   The Kapitan Kuznetsov was proceeding to Arkhangelsk, Russia in ballast from Varandei for repair work when it encountered heavy seas reaching 3.5 meters high.   An EPIRB signal was received from the freighter by authorities.  The Russian Search and Rescue Operation Center dispatched a tug to the scene while aircraft remained grounded due to the severe weather.   No distress signal was sent by the crew and the vessel’s last communication was at 0200 Moscow time.  Last report stated there has been some debris spotted, but no trace of the 11 crewmen.  The Kapitan Kuznetsov was designed to operate in rivers and not in heavy seas.

Update:

Reports state the icebreaker Dikson found the Kapitan Kuznetsov disabled, but still afloat.  The crew is reported safe.  The Kapitan Kuznetsov had been struck by a wave which knocked out all instruments, communications and rudder control.   The mate on board was injured.  The vessel is to be towed to Arkhangelsk.
