Collision on the Weser
The 294 meter long, 63160 dwt boxship MOL Efficiency was struck by the 166 meter long, 16073 dwt freighter Splittnes in the fog on the Weser River near Bremerhaven, Germany. The Splittnes had significant damage with the forepeak suffering a hole some 10 to 15 meters long. The breach allowed a large amount of water to ingress resulting in a 20 degree starboard list. The MOL Efficiency suffered a large hole in the stern section of the hull just above the waterline. There were no injuries on either vessel. Both vessels were towed to a quay where fire rescue were assisting in dewatering the Splittnes. Reports state that visibility was limited to just 180 meters at the time of the collision. The water police is conducting an investigation into the incident.
