A coal barge went aground on the Monongahela River near Brownsville, Pennsylvania pushed by the towboat Francis J. Blank.   The Francis J. Blank was proceeding down river with three barges when one struck bottom and began to leak.  The towboat pushed the leaking barge onto the river bank to prevent it from it sinking.  River traffic was halted while another barge was brought to the scene to lighter the coal.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 50 meter long towboat William E. Porter allided with a bridge on the Monongahela River near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The towboat with three loaded coal barges struck the pilings of the Hot Metal Bridge.  No reports of damage to the vessels or the bridge.   The vessels were inspected and allowed to proceed to its destination of South Point, Ohio.   Authorities inspected the bridge and reopen it to traffic a short time later.   The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.   Reports suggest the high water and fast current may have been a factor.
