On January 31, the 13 meter long water taxi Vigilant collided with the dredger Nova Venture on the Wadden Sea near Nes, Ameland Island, Netherlands. The Vigilant was proceeding to Ameland from Holwerd with 11 passengers. The two vessels were approaching each other from opposite directions. Just before the two vessels would strike head-on, the master of the Vigilant attempted to veer away. The water taxi’s bow struck hard into the dredger causing severe damage to the hull.

Several passengers on the Vigilant were slightly injured,  but two passengers had significant injuries and had to be later taken to hospital in Leeuwarden for treatment. Both passengers recovered and were later released.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. No details reported if any injuries or damage to the Nova Venture from the collision.

The 110 meter long self-propelled tanker Istoromi collided with the 86 meter long self-propelled tanker Alto Mira on the Outer Maas near Poortugaal, Netherlands. Two vessels were passing during the early morning hours when the Alto Mira suffered a steering fault. Unable to avoid collision the master of the Alto Mira kept the tanker on a path where both vessels collided  head-on.

Both vessels sustained bow damage above the waterline vessels. The damage was limited to the bow area and no water ingress. The vessels were still able proceed  under their own power.  The tankers then proceeded to Geul. There the vessels unloaded their cargo. The Istoronmi discharged acetone while the Alto Mira unloaded ethanol.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 146 meter long towboat Aries with two barges caught fire in the lock at Terneuzen, Netherlands. The Aries was headed to Ghent from Hansweert when a fire broke out in the engine room. The crew attempted to extinguish the blaze before calling the local fire brigade for assistance. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire an hour later.

Both the master and the crew had minor injures from smoke inhalation and required medical assistance. The fire caused minimal damage and the Aries was able to continue on its voyage a few hours later. No reports of pollution released.
