The 289 meter long, 170082 dwt bulk carrier New Katerina caught fire with berthed in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The fire started on an excavator working the vessel’s hold. The New Katerina, loaded with coal, released dense smoke. The crew was able to escape the vessel with no injuries. The local fire brigade, assisted by fire boats, were able to bring the blaze under control a few hours later. No reports of pollution released.
The 230 meter long bulk carrier AM Hamburg ran aground off Terneuzen, Netherlands. The bulk carrier had departed from Dunkirk and was headed up the Wester Scheldt when it suffered a power blackout. The AM Hamburg drifted until it ran aground. Seven tugs were dispatched and were able to quickly refloat the AM Hamburg and safely anchored. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
On October 2, the 110 meter long passenger ship Amelia collided with the 80 meter long, 1121 ton self-propelled bargeIsala on the Scheldt-Rhine Canal near Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands. The Isala, loaded with 1050 ton cargo of salt, had become disabled on the Scheldt-Rhine Canal after suffering a technical fault. The crew of the Isala could not control the barge which went perpendicular to the fairway. The Amelia was unable to slow down in time before it struck the Isala amidships. The Isala sustained water ingress and sank within 10 minutes. The two crew from the Isala were rescued from the water by the Amelia. Traffic on the Scheldt-Rhine Canal was diverted to alternate routes as the sunken Isala blocked the canal. Authorities placed booms around the wreck as diesel fuel sheen was visible. Reports state the Isala will be salvaged.
