On the late morning of December 6, the 82 meter long, 2503 dwt cargo vessel Valday (IMO:9142576) became disabled in the North Sea off the Netherlands. The Valday had suffered main engine failure and had gone adrift in stormy conditions. Reports state the crew attempted to drop the vessel’s anchors, but the anchors were lost. The Netherlands Coast Guard alerted to the situation dispatched multiple tugs to rescue the cargo vessel. The tugs made multiple attempts to establish a towing line, but each failed due to the rough conditions. It would take a few additional hours before conditions improved and the seas calmer to allow the tugs to get the towing connection established.

Reports state there were three injured during the attempts to connect the towing line. These crew were airlifted by a Coast Guard helicopter and taken to hospital for treatment. The Valday would be towed to Rotterdam. No reports of damage or pollution released.

On December 2, the 110 meter long self-propelled barge Vista Mare (MMSI: 244670495) sprung a leak on the IJssel River while berthed at Zutphen, Netherlands. The local fire brigade arrived on scene and found the vessel loaded with 800 tons of ore was sinking.  De-watering pumps were deployed to control the flooding while efforts were made to unload the cargo of ore. When the unloading was completed, the Vista Mare was able to proceed to a shipyard for repairs. No reports of injuries to the 4 crew on board.

On the evening of November 29, the residents near the Coenecoop Bridge in Waddinxveen, Netherlands discovered how much of an impact a bridge allision can be. The 90 meter long self-propelled container-barge Alphenaar (MMSI: 244059204) was proceeding on the Gouwe River when it struck one of the pillars of the bridge. Residents stated they could hear a loud bang and many houses shook from the allision. Traffic on the bridge and on the river was halted for several hours until the vessel and bridge could be inspected. While the inspection found no damage to the bridge, the Alphenaar sustained limited bow damage. Authorities allowed the vessel to proceed on its journey.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. See video of allision at ad.nl
