Viking II

Viking II

The fishing vessel Viking II sank near Cape May, New Jersey.  The fishing vessel began to leak quickly overwhelming the vessel’s pumps.   The crew requested assistance with the Coast Guard dispatching a helicopter to the scene.   The helicopter lowered a dewatering pump to the Viking II.  However, the pump  could not keep up with the water ingress.   A second pump was dropped to the vessel, but the crew was unable to recover it.  A nearby fishing vessel arrived on scene and safely evacuated the three crew.  The men were later transferred to a cutter who returned them to shore.   No signs of pollution reported.

The 38 foot long fishing vessel Southern Comfort ran aground while proceeding through Barnegat Light Inlet, New Jersey.  The vessel had struck the rocks and suffered water ingress.   The six people on board quickly alerted the Coast Guard before abandoning into the ship’s life raft before the fishing vessel sank.  The Coast Guard dispatched to rescue boats to the scene and rescued all six people safely. No reports of injuries.   The Southern Comfort sank with 350 gallons of diesel fuel on board which is a concern for possible release of pollution into the water.

The Bravest

The Bravest

The 46 meter long high speed ferry Bravest ran aground near Middletown, New Jersey.   The ferry was en route to Belford, New Jersey when it veered to close to shore during an extremely low tide.    The ferry had mooved out of the center of the navigation channel to allow another vessel to go by.   No passengers were on board at the time of the grounding.   A tugboat was able to pull the vessel free a few hours later.  There was no damage and the ferry proceeded back to port.  The vessel returned to service on the same day.  No injuries or pollution released.
