Justice

The 30 meter long tugboat Justice suffered a leak and sank in the Mississippi River near New Orleans, Louisiana.  The three crew on board were unable to control the water ingress and had to abandoned ship.   The tug sank with 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board leaving a small sheen on the water.  No reports of injuries.   Divers were able to plug fuel vents to prevent any further pollution being released.

The 269 meter long, 151693 dwt tanker Asian Spirit collided with a barge on the Mississippi River near New Orleans, Louisiana.  Both vessels only sustained slight damage.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Coast Guard dispatched investigators to the scene.

A barge being towed by two towing vessels, the 65-foot Shannan C (Imo 8991724) and 22 meter long Portier I, allided with the Highway 90 Bridge over Chef Menteur Pass which connects Lake Pontchartrain to Lake Borgne near New Orleans, Louisiana.  The barge caused considerable damage to the bridge forcing officials to close the bridge to vehicle and marine traffic.   Estimates place the cost of damage near $100,000.    The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.
