Ferry Herbert H. Lehman

The former 300 foot long Staten Island ferry Governor Herbert H. Lehman partially sank on the Hudson River near Newburgh, New York.    The vessel sprung a leak and sank to the bottom of the river.   Authorities placed an oil boom to contain the small amounts of pollution released.  No reports of injuries.   The ferry built in 1965 was decommissioned in 2007 and had changed hands several times with the last owner planning to turn the vessel into a floating restaurant.  It is now slated to be raised and later scrapped.

New York Lost

New York Lost

The 50 foot fishing vessel New York went ashore near Coos Bay, Oregon.   The crew contacted the Coast Guard that the vessel had water ingress and required assistance.   The Coast Guard launched the 47 foot lifeboat along with a Dolphin helicopter to the scene.  The Helicopter attempted to hoist the three men on board the New York, but the heavy surf made the fishing vessel to unstable.  The three men on the fishing vessel were able to swim ashore on their own.  The Coast Guard transported the men back to North Bend station where EMS were awaiting.  No reports of injuries, but there is large amounts of debris and some pollution released.   The New York had 300 gallons of diesel fuel and 15 gallons of hydraulic oil on board at the time of the incident.  An oil spill response contractor has been hired to assess and perform clean-up operations.

Hudson River Capsize

Hudson River Capsize

A 31 foot long tugboat capsized on the Hudson River off  New York, New York sending one crewman into the water.   The tugboat was attempting to line up with a work barge when it capsized.  Two crewmen were able to jump onto the work barge while one man was thrown into the water.   The crewman was quickly pulled out of the water from another nearby tugboat.  The vessel drifted down river before sinking off Pier 84.   The man pulled from the water suffered minor injuries.   The cause for the vessel to capsize is still unknown.  Authorities are conducting an investigation.
