The 135 meter long, 8950 dwt container ship Mississipiborg went aground at Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada.   The Mississipiborg was attempting to leave port laden with kraft paper at low tide in strong crosswind when it became stuck in the silt and sand.  The vessel was refloated two hours later on the incoming tide and returned to harbour where it turned around before attempting to leave port again.  On the second attempt, the Mississipiborg went aground again a short distance beyond the spot of the first grounding.   The vessel remained aground until the high tide where the Mississipiborg was refloated and departed.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Canadian Miner

Canadian Miner

The 223 meter long, 28094 dwt bulk freighter Canadian Miner went aground on Scatarie Island off Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.   The freighter was under tow when the towline parted in heavy seas and it went ashore.   The Miner has 6.5 metric tons of fuel on board to run the generator.   Initial attempts to pull the freighter off the rocks had failed.   The Coast Guard is monitoring the situation, but there were no immediate environmental concerns.   The Miner was en route to Aliaga, Turkey to the breakers.   The Canadian Miner was built as the Maplecliffe Hall in 1966 to haul iron ore and grain on the Great Lakes.

The 43 foot fishing vessel Emily Lisa caught fire while fishing south of Halifax.   The four crew on board were able to send out a mayday before abandoning  ship.   All four men escaped into a life raft.   The Coast Guard disptached an aircraft and helicopter to the scene.  The vessel Chempran Sea was first to reach the scene and rescued the crew.   All four men were uninjured and were being transported to Sydney, Nova Scotia.   The cause of the fire was not yet reported.
