Mercosul Santos

The 210 meter long, 35239 dwt container ship Mercosul Santos collided with a tug on the Amazon River near Obidios, Brasil. The Mercosul Santos was headed towards Manaus when it struck a tug that was pushing nine barges. One barge was cut in two and sank to the river bottom. Another barge was crushed and remain stuck on the bulbous bow of the Mercosul Santos.

Nine of the 11 crew who were on board the barges and tug were reported as missing and feared dead. Authorities requested divers from Santarem to search for the missing crew.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 185 meter long, 38494 dwt cargo vessel Takeshio ran aground on the Amazon River near Santarém, Pará, Brazil.  The Takeshio was proceeding up the river with a cargo of wheat when it became stuck on a sandbar.  Reports state the river level was just 1.3 meters compared to 2.7 meters last year. There was no injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 120 meter long, 6,449 dwt livestock carrier Haidar capsized while berthed  at Barcarena, Para, Brazil. The Haidar was loaded with some 5,000 cattle and was preparing to depart for Venezuela when it lost stability when it suffered water ingress.  The livestock carrier capsized and eventually sank onto its port side.  No reports of injuries, but thousands of cattle were trapped on board and perished.  A small number of cattle were fortunately enough to escape and were able to rush onto the side of the vessel.  The local port authority has launched an investigation into the incident.
