Collision on Parana River

The 32 meter long, 203 dwt tug Ava Payagua collided with the 82 meter long sand-barge Rio Turbio on the Parana River off the 102 kilometer mark near Zarate, Argentina .   The Ava Payagua was undamaged, but the Rio Turbio quickly capsized and sank.   No reports of injuries to the 12 crew on board the Ava Payagua.   Authorities launched multiple vessels on scene conducting search and rescue for the missing men.  Divers were sent into the vessel and found one survivor.   One engineer was found alive in the capsized hull and was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia.  Divers later found four bodies trapped in the hull.   Divers continue to search for three missing crewmen.   Authorities placed a boom was placed around the Rio Turbio to contain any pollution that may be released.   Reports state three crew from the Ava Payagua were taken into custody while the vessel was being detained for inspection.   An investigation into the incident is being conducted.

Samjohn Liberty

The 225 meter long, 74761 dwt bulk freighter Samjohn Liberty ran aground on the Parana River near the 290 kilometer mark.   The vessel departed Rosario, Argentina with 48,000 tons of soybeans when it ran aground in the channel.   Two tugs have attempted to refloat the freighter while river traffic has been halted.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The water level was the cause of the grounding.   The Parana River is lower due to the severe drought earlier in the year.

Parana River Groundings

Multiple vessels went aground on the Parana River due to the low water level.   The 182 meter long, 50923 dwt tanker Prisco Elizaveta went aground on the river near the 440 kilometer mark.   The tanker was loaded with 33000 metric tons of soybean oil bound for India.   The 189 meter long, 41712 dwt bulk freighter Eirini K went aground at the 406 kilometer mark on the river.   The Eirini K had departed from Puerto San Martin with grain en route to Greece and Isreal.   The 191 meter long, 43980 dwt bulk freighter Borak 1 went aground on the river with no details reported.   All the vessels were refloated and were able to continue on their voyage.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
