The 1,112 foot long, 154,407 gt passenger cruise ship Freedom of the Seas caught fire while entering into the port of Falmouth, Jamaica. The fire started in a mechanical space near the stack spewing out black smoke.  One crewman sustained injuries receiving first-degree burns. No reports of injuries to any of the 4,454 passengers on board.  The vessel’s fire suppression system was activated and extinguished the blaze within two hours.  The  Freedom of the Seas arrived in Falmouth and passengers were able to disembark.  Damage from the fire was reported to be limited and the cruise itinerary has not changed.  The Coast Guard will inspect the vessel when it returns to the United States.

The 120 foot long passenger ship Royal Winner Princess II allided with a boat ramp pier near Snow’s Cut, North Carolina. The vessel had suffered a malfunction when a steering pump failed and the vessel drifted into the pier.  The vessel was able to restore the pump and return to its berth. Reports state 6 of the 159 passengers on board suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.


Eurocargo Trieste

Eurocargo Trieste

The 185 meter long ro-ro cargo vessel Eurocargo Trieste allided with the 191 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Hellenic Spirit at Patras, Greece. The Eurocargo Trieste was attempting to moor when it struck the port side of the Hellenic Spirit.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released on either vessel. Both vessels were inspected and were allowed to leave port the following day.
