The 208 meter long, 4915 dwt passenger cruise ship Zenith caught fire near Venice, Italy.  The fire started in the vessel’s engine room while the cruise ship was en route to Venice from Ravenna with 1672 passengers on board.  The crew was able to extinguish the blaze, but the fire had damaged the main engine disabling the ship.   The Zenith dropped anchor until it could be towed to Venice.   No reports of injuries or pollution released.  Reports state the repairs to the engine would be completed by the following day.

Victoria Clipper 3

The 30 meter long catamaran passenger ship Victoria Clipper 3 suffered a fire while on a day trip to the San Juan Islands from Seattle. The fire started in some insulation surrounding the vessel’s engines.  The crew sealed the room and extinguished the blaze using the vessel’s fire suppression system.  No reports of injuries to the crew or the 159 passengers on board.   The vessel proceeded to a nearby marina.   The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

The 141 meter long, 2651 dwt passenger ship Nissos Mykonos suffered a fire in the Aegean Sea near Karlovassi, Greece.   The Nissos Mykonos had left Piraeus with 174 passengers and 74 crew bound for Samos with other stops at several islands.  The fire started in the vessel’s smokestack releasing thick black smoke.  The crew was able to extinguish the blaze.   Five passengers were evacuated from the vessel after suffering from smoke inhalation.  The remaining passengers were transferred to another ferry.  No details reported to the extent of damage to the vessel.
