The 202 meter long, 3210 dwt passenger ship Bahamas Celebration suffered a fire while off Grand Bahama, Bahamas.  One of the vessel’s six generators had caught fire in the engine room.  A piston rod broke and went through the side of the engine.   The crew was able to quickly contain and extinguish the blaze.  However, the vessel’s main engine was shut down requiring a tugs to tow the vessel into port.     None of the 707 passengers or 300 crewmen were injured.   No reports of any pollution being released.

Superferry 1 Aground

Superferry 1 Aground

The 132 meter long, 2908 dwt passenger vessel Superferry 1 went aground off Ditaytayan Island, Philippines.   The Superferry 1 loaded with 618 passengers from Puerto Princesa City was close to the port at Coron when it struck a reef.  The Philippine Coast Guard was alerted and deployed two vessels to the scene.   With the aid of three other vessels, all 618 passengers were evacuated from the Superferry 1 and safely taken ashore.   Reports state the passengers are housed at the local gymnasium until a replacement vessel can arrive to take them to Manila.   The Superferry 1 has suffered a minor list, but no reports of hull damage or water ingress.  No reports of injuries or pollution being released.

Superspeed 1

Superspeed 1

The 212 meter long passenger ship Superspeed 1 became disabled off Oksøy Lighthouse, Norway.  The passenger ship was struck by a large wave which damaged the vessel’s bridge causing an engine failure.  The crew was able to restart the engine and the vessel proceeded at reduced speed.  Tugs and Lifeboats were dispatched and escorted the Superspeed 1 to Kritiansand.   No reports of injuries to any of the 350 passengers or 100 crew on board.  Reports state the wave heights were 4 to 5 meters at the time of the incident.  The vessel cancelled later voyage due to the bad weather.
