Full Speed Astern

The 40 meter long passenger ship Schaprode collided with three other vessels while attempting to berth at Neuendorf, Germany on Hiddensee island.  The Schaprode suffered a control failure with the engine causing it to enter the port at full speed astern.   The ferry struck one sailboat and two motor boats sinking all the vessels.  The ferry also damage a powerline for the harbor’s lighting.  There were few passengers on board at the time of the incident and no one was injured.   Reports place the damage around 60000€.   The water police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

Fire on the Flamenco

Fire on the Flamenco

The 135 meter long passenger ship Flamenco suffered a fire in the vessel’s galley while cruising on the Danube River near Pichelsdorf, Austria.  The fire started in one of the galley’s ovens releasing dense smoke.  The crew quickly evacuated the passengers from their cabins onto the deck.  Passengers were wrapped in blankets on deck while firefighters spent two hours extinguishing the blaze.   The galley was destroyed in the fire, but firefighters prevented any damage to other parts of the vessel.   No reports of injuries to the crew or the 140 passengers on board.   The Flamenco was allowed to continue upstream with all 140 passengers on board.  Initial reports state the likely cause of the fire were rolls which were forgotten in the oven.

Aratere Disabled

Aratere Disabled

The 180 meter long, 3977 dwt passenger ship Aratere became disabled off Wellington, New Zealand after the vessel suffered engine failure.   The Aratere had a problem with its port shaft and requested tugs to tow the vessel into port.  The Aratere was heading to Wellington from Picton with a cargo of freight.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.   Reports state the vessel should be able to make repairs and return to service later the same day.
