The passenger vessel Mary The Queen went aground in Manila Bay with over 1,000 passengers on board.   The vessel was bound for Romblon and Masbate when it encountered heavy seas during the night.   The master decided the weather was too severe and headed back to port.   While maneuvering, the Mary The Queen grounded in shallow water a few kilometers from its pier.   No reports of injuries or damage.

Kong Harald Damaged

Reports state the 122 meter long, 902 dwt passenger ship Kong Harald  had damaged its hull while crossing the Lepsøyrevet.    The Kong Harald had left Alesund with 226 people on board heading towards Molde, Norway.   When the vessel reached midway, it struck bottom.   The Lepsøyrevet area has shallow areas of 5.4 meters deep at low tide while the Kong Harald hull reaches 5 meters underwater.    When divers did an inspection, the damage was significant with two bottom tanks holed.  Passengers were informed they would be transferred to other forms of transport including bus, plane or ship.  Many passengers had planned a 11 day cruise of the Norwegian coast on the Kong Harald.  The Kong Harald is set to be dry docked for repairs.   No reports of injuries or pollution being reported.

Cruise Ship Adrift

The  194 meter long, 3700 dwt passenger ship Ocean Star Pacific went adrift after the vessel lost power.   The Ocean Star Pacific had left with 522 passengers and 226 crew from Acapulco, Mexico heading back from a three-day cruise  when 1 of the 6 generators caught fire.   The fire was small and was quickly extinguished, but the damage cause the vessel to suffer a complete blackout.    The passengers were evacuated by catamaran to the coastal resort town of  Huatulco.   There were no injuries reported.   The vessel will be towed to Salina Cruz for repairs.
History of the Ocean Star Pacific:

  • 1971 – built for Royal Caribbean Cruises as the Nordic Prince
  • 1980 – the vessel was lengthen with a new midsection
  • 1995 – sold and renamed Carousel
  • 2004 – sold and renamed Aquamarine
  • 2006 – chartered and named Arielle before going back to the name Aquamarine
  • 2010 – sold for $23 million and renamed Ocean Star Pacific
