On March 8, the fishing vessel Guariste Primero caught fire in the Pacific Ocean some 800 miles off the coast of Peru.  The Guariste Primero was fishing for swordfish when fire erupted from the vessel’s engine room. The 14 crew on board were unable to contain the blaze and were forced to abandoned ship. Thirteen of the crew were able to escape to the life rafts.  The chief engineer was discovered missing and presumed to have been trapped in the engine room.  The 13 survivors were rescued by a nearby fishing vessel.

The 26 meter long tugboat Pachacámac capsized and sank off Mollendo, Peru. The tug had struck an underwater rock off the beach Catarindo and capsized.  Many local swimmers were first to the scene and rescued two of the three crew on board. Divers were requested to search for the missing third crewman. Authorities placed booms around the sunken tug to contain any fuel released. Owners of the tug later started to remove fuel off the vessel to avoid impacting the local beach.

The 34 foot long fishing vessel Marisol II collided during the night with the 15 meter long fishing vessel Tasa 147 off Pisco, Peru.  The crewman at the wheel on the Tasa 147 had fallen asleep allowing the Tasa 147 to strike into the side of the Marisol II.  The Marisol II crew was asleep and only 3 of the 15 crew were able to escape before the fishing vessel capsized.  Authorities were later to recover 9 bodies from the Marisol II.  The Peruian Navy and Coast Guard conducted a search and rescue mission to locate the missing 3 crew.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
