On the night of November 13, the 65 foot long fishing vessel Carole B (MMSI: 367173750) caught fire on the Frederick Sound while berthed in Petersburg, Alaska. Reports state the fire started by a portable heater near or within the vessel’s galley. A person passing through the area spotted the smoke coming from the fishing vessel and alerted local fire fighters.  The local fire fighters were able to completely extinguish the blaze in an hour and a half. No one was on board the Carole B at the time of the fire.

Reports state the vessel did sustain material damage and extensive smoke damage. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

On January 18, the 190 meter long, 7100 dwt ro-ro ferry Petersburg allided with the pier at Sassnitz, Germany.  The Petersburg had arrived from Mukran when it struck a ramp at the ferry terminal.   The vessel’s stern ramp sustained major damage estimated over 100,000 Euros.  No reports of injuries to passengers or crew and no pollution was released.   Reports state the master of the vessel faces criminal charges while the vessel was evaluated to be redirected to be repaired at a nearby shipyard.

Fishing Vessel Capsizes

The 40 foot long fishing vessel Dawn capsized as it was leaving the harbour at Petersburg, Alaska.  The vessel rolled over to starboard and began to sink.  One crewman was able to climb out and reach the dock while the other crewman was forced to jump into the frigid waters and swim to a nearby vessel.  No reports of injuries.  An oil boom was placed around the vessel as some pollution was released.  The vessel was not insured.
