The 111 meter long passenger ship Regina Rheni caught fire during the night on the Rhine river near Dusseldorf, Germany.  The fire started in the kitchen and quickly filling the vessel with dense smoke.   The crew closed the hatches to contain the blaze while moving passengers to the outer deck.   The fire damaged the electrical leaving everyone in the dark.  The Regina Rheni’s 102 passengers and 32 crew were safely evacuated  by the assistance of rescue boats from Dusseldorf.  Local firefighters boarded the vessel and the blaze was extinguished a few hours later.  Ten passengers were injured and were treated for smoke inhalation.   The Regina Rheni was en route to Arnhem on a schedule cruise.   The water police has launched an investigation into the incident.

The 98 meter long self-propelled tanker Synthese 3 went aground on the Rhine River near Oberwesel, Germany.  The tanker was carrying 1300 tons of sulphuric acid from Ludwigshafen  bound for Antwerp, Belgium when the tanker went off course and ran aground.   No reports of injuries, but traffic on the river near the scene was suspended.  The Synthese 3  had a double-hull and no pollution or cargo was released.  The tanker Synthese 15 was brought to the scene and unloaded some 240 tons off the Synthese 3 before it could be refloated.  The vessel was refloated a few hours later and proceeded to Duisburg for inspection.  The water police are conducting an investigation into the incident.

The 105 meter long passenger ship Bellriva ran aground on the Rhine River near Karlsruhe, Germany.  The Bellriva suffered damage to its hull resulting in water ingress.   The vessel’s pumps kept the ship afloat long enough for the Bellriva to reach safety at Karlsruhe.   The 114 passengers on board were transferred to the passenger ship Karlsruhe which by chance was in port at the time.   The local fire brigade was contacted who help keep the Bellriva afloat with dewatering pumps.   The owners have reserved dock space to allow divers to patch the leak.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The water police has started an investigation into the incident.   Reports state the master of the vessel lacked certificates allowing the vessel to be operating on the route.
