On June 23, the 183 meter long self-propelled container-barge Alorba allided with the bridge near Weil am Rhein, Germany.  The Alorba was heading south from Basel with a cargo of containers when it approached the Palmrain Bridge. The crew attempted to lower the wheelhouse to safely pass under the bridge when there was a mechanical malfunction. The wheelhouse struck the bridge and severely damaged.  The bridge was closed to traffic to be inspected for damage.  No reports of injuries.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

On May 19, the 110 meter long self-propelled tanker-barge Fint sprung a leak on the Rhine while berthed near Basel, Switzerland.  The Fint was bound for Birsfelden from Weil upon Rhine with a cargo of diesel fuel when it suffered water ingress in one of the cargo tanks. The crew was able to divert the cargo of fuel into another cargo tank.  Authorities were alerted and arrived on scene to monitor the situation. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The 107 meter long self-propelled barge Sonja allided with the Friedrich-Ebert Bridge over the Rhine river near Duisburg-Ruhrort, Germany. The Sonja was passing under the bridge when it’s aft crane boom struck the underside of the bridge. The crane was bent backwards and a cable run underneath the bridge was torn off.  No reports of injuries. Traffic was halted until the bridge could be inspected for damage. Authorities have detained the Sonja while it conducts an investigation. Reports state the vessel was en route to Antwerp.
