On May 24, the 71 meter long, 200 dwt high-speed ro-ro passenger ferry Isola Di Capraia ran aground in the Adriatic Sea at the harbor of San Nicola, Tremiti Islands, Italy. The ferry had sailed from Termoli with 27 passengers.  As the Isola Di Capraia attempted to enter the harbor at San Nicola, it lost control.  The crew drop both anchors, but the ferry continued forward until it ran aground on the outer breakwater. The ferry pulled itself free a short time later and proceeded to its berth. Divers inspected the hull and found minor damage to the bow. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

The crew made repairs and the Isola Di Capraia was able to proceed back to Termoli. Reports state the ferry had suffered a mechanical breakdown resulting in the grounding.

The 28 meter long ro-ro passenger ferry Hochdonn collided with the 90 meter long, 4539 dwt cargo vessel Scheldebank on the Kiel Canal in Hochdonn, Germany.  The ferry was struck by the Scheldebank in dense fog resulting in heavy damage to the port side of Hochdonn. A vehicle on the ferry was also damaged. The Scheldebank had slight damage to its bow.  No one was injured on either vessel. The Hochdonn was taken out of service and replaced with another ferry.

The water police have not reported the cause of the collision. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

The 168 meter long, 3067 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Spirit of Vancouver Island allided with the dock at Tsawwassen, British Columbia, Canada. The ferry was attempting to berth when it struck the dock. The ferry’s bow ramp was damage and required to be cut away to allow vehicles to be unloaded. Reports state the Spirit of Vancouver Island had to cancel several scheduled crossings until repairs could be completed. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. No reports of injuries or pollution released.
