Kriti II

 

The 194 meter long, 5339 dwt ro-ro ferry Kriti II caught fire near Patras, Greece.  The fire started in the car deck with smoke billowing out from the decks.    The crew fought the fire and were able to contain the blaze.   When the vessel reached Patras, the 113 passengers were evacuated with the assistance of Coast Guard, fishing vessels and other local vessels.  The local fire brigade fought through the dense smoke, but was able to extinguish the blaze a short time later.   No reports of injuries.  Some 40 of the 92 vehicles were damaged in the fire.   Initial reports state the fire started in a refrigerator truck which had suffered an electrical short.

St. John

St. John

The ro-ro ferry St. John became disabled on the Mississippi River while approaching the pier at Chalmette, Louisiana.  The ferry had difficulty maintaining power while crossing the Mississippi with the engine stopping several times.  As the ferry approached the dock, it’s engines failed allowing the ferry to strike a barge moored at the dock.  No reports of injuries, but several passengers were shaken up by the incident.   The St. John was pulled from service while the Coast Guard investigates the incident.

The 84 meter long ro-ro ferry Møysalen became disabled while en route between Sandnessjøen, Dønna and Løkta.   The Møysalen had suffered engine failure when after an electrical fault.  The engine room filled with smoke, but there was no fire.   The crew requested assistance via Bodø who dispatched two tugs to the scene.  No reports of injuries to the two passengers and seven crew on board.  The Møysalen was towed by the tugs to Sandnessjøen, Norway where it will be repaired.
