The 134 meter long, 9200 dwt cargo vessel Shantar collided with the 134 meter long, 7346 dwt cargo vessel Tanir in Avacha Bay, Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, Russia. The Shantar’s bow struck into the portside of the Tanir resulting in a breach below the waterline and water ingress. Divers were called out and a patch sealed the breach on the Tanir.  No reports of injuries. Both vessels later proceeded to Petropavlovsk for inspection.

 

 

Lucky Star 8

The 96 meter long, 5838 dwt cargo vessel Lucky Star 8 went aground in the Sea of Japan near Olga Bay, Russia. Reports state there were no injuries among the 14 crew on board. Salvage attempts will be made when conditions improve aided by a nearby tug. No reports of pollution released.

Kandy

On January 21, the 98 meter long, 4811 dwt LPG tanker Maestro and the 65 meter long, 1038 dwt tanker Kandy caught fire in the Black Sea near the Kerch Strait. The two vessels were involved transferring fuel when there was a sudden explosion on deck.  Both the Maestro and Kandy were engulfed in flames killing some crew and others overboard. Black smoke spilled out alerting authorities.

Authorities recovered 11 bodies from the sea. The Kandy had a crew of 17 and the Maestro had 14 crew.  Russian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. No further details reported.
