On the morning of January 28, the 150.5 meter long, 5970 dwt ro-ro passenger ferry Firuze G (IMO: 7811329) caught fire on the Black Sea while berthed at Samsun, Turkey. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room when a generator failed. The fire quickly spread spewing out dense smoke.  The local fire brigade arrived on scene and was able to contain the blaze after 2.5 hours of intense work. Fire fighting vessels assisted by cooling down the hull with water spray.

All 33 crew on board the Firuze G were able to evacuate safely ashore and there were no reports of injuries.  The extent of damage caused by the fire was not disclosed. There were no reports if the incident would be investigated by authorities.

 

 

Volgo-Balt 214

On January 7, the 113 meter long cargo vessel Volgo-Balt 214 broke-in-two and sank in the Black Sea off Samsun, Turkey.  The Volgo-Balt 214 was loaded with 3300 tons of coal from Azov bound for Samsun in heavy seas when a large wave smashed against the vessel causing a hull fracture.  The bow of the Volgo-Balt 214 broke away and both sections of the cargo vessel flooding.  Seven of the 13 crew were able to escape into the life rafts.

The Turkish Coast Guard dispatched four helicopters and several vessels to conduct a search and rescue operation.  Authorities rescued the 7 crew from the life rafts and continued search the remaining crew.  The following day authorities were able to recover the bodies of the missing crewmen.  Reports state the Volgo-Balt 214 had several reported deficiencies during an inspection in 2017 including hull corrosion and cracking.  Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

On August 14, the 90 meter long, 4040 dwt cargo vessel Tokay Akar ran aground along the breakwater at Samsun, Turkey. The Tokay Akar had been at anchor at the Samsun anchorage when a storm with strong winds caused the vessel’s anchor to drag. The unmanned Tokay Akar drifted until it ran up on to the breakwater. The cargo vessel sustained hull damage to ballast tanks and suffered water ingress. No pollution reported. Reports state the Tokay Akar had been left at anchor after a bankruptcy and the fuel had been removed. Local authorities will arrange salvage when weather permits.
