On May 11, the 304 meter long, 85760 dwt container ship MSC Antonia (IMO: 9398216) ran aground in the Red Sea some 100 nautical miles from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The boxship was headed for Jeddah after making a stop at Port Sudan when it ran aground.  After the grounding, the vessel developed a small list to port. The MSC Antonia was unable to free itself and requested assistance.  Reports state several tugs were dispatched to help refloat the container ship.

The cause of the grounding is under investigation. News reports suggest the MSC Antonia ran aground due to its GPS being jammed by electronic interference in the area. The vessel owners has not disclosed or made comments about the incident.  No details if any damage or pollution had been release from the incident.

The 138 meter long, 12667 dwt freighter Fredensborg caught fire while docked at the port of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.  The vessel had arrived from Thailand with a cargo of hardware when a fire was discovered in the hold.  The crew and local firefighters used carbon dioxide were able to extinguish the blaze.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The amount of damage to the vessel was not yet reported until an official investigation can be completed.

Update: Stolt Explosion

The 150 meter long, 25269 dwt chemical tanker Stolt Valor suffered an explosion while proceeding through the Persian Gulf near Jubail, Saudi Arabia ( 27.5072° / 50.26581).     Twenty four of the 25 crew on board abandoned ship into the vessel’s life rafts.   All were quickly rescued by a nearby naval vessel.  One crewman was reported missing but was confirmed dead the next day.   Authorities have dispatched fire fighting tugs to the scene.   The Stolt Valor had departed from Jubail with 13000 metric tons of Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) bound for Bahrain.   Reports state MTBE is highly toxic and is a known to cause cancer.

The Stolt Valor was held off Somalia in 2008 after being hijacked by pirates.    The vessel remained in pirates hands for two months until it was released.
