Tanker Seiyoh foundered

The 499 dwt tanker Seiyoh capsized and sank in the Sea of Japan. The tanker left Oita, Japan bound for Niigata with a cargo of vinyl acetate monomer. The vessel developed a list as it was pounded by high winds and 12-16 foot waves. The vessel’s engine room flooded and the crew abandoned ship. Reports state that 4 of the 5 crewmen onboard were rescued, but one perished later from cardiopulmonary arrest. The master of the vessel is reported missing.

Tanker Alisa disabled

Tanker Alisa disabled

The 2174 dwt tanker Alisa becamed disabled off Vanino, Russia in the Sea of Japan. The Alisa’s engine and generator overheated when the cooling system failed. Tugs from Vanino were unable to connect a towline due to the bad weather and icing. The tanker was able to run engine for short periods to avoid drifting. Reports state a salvage vessel had offer to tow the tanker, but the master declined.

Freighter Sunrise Collides

Freighter Sunrise Collides

The 1810 dwt freighter Sunrise collided with a fishing trawler in the Sea of Japan near the South and North Korea border. The vessel sustained damage and the hull was holed. Reports of water ingress with a resulting list to starboard. The Sunrise was able to reach the port of Sokcho, South Korea. No reports of injury of the 17 crewmen onboard.
