On February 27, the 72 meter long cargo vessel Dede and the 88 meter long, 3735 dwt cargo vessel Clavigo ran aground in the Sea of Marmara off Tuzla, Turkey. The Clavigo had been at anchor when a storm with strong winds struck the area.  The Clavigo‘s anchor to drag and the cargo vessel drifted towards shore when it struck the anchored Dede breaking its mooring.  Both vessel drifted until they crashed against a breakwater near Tuzla.

The Dede, severely damaged by the allision, partially capsized on its starboard side suffering water ingress in the cargo holds. Its hull has multiple large gashes. The Clavigo sustained some hull damage with it a list on its starboard side. Both crews were safely rescued. No reports of injuries the 13 person on board.

Authorities state some pollution has been released by both vessels. Reports state fuel tanks have been ruptured when the cargo vessels ran aground.  The Dede may not be salvaged, but scrapped on site whereas the Clavigo will be recovered.

On February 7. the 130 meter long, 7697 dwt tanker Aster Alvar ran aground off the Çınarcık beach in the Sea of Marmara.  The Aster Alvar was underway in the Sea of Marmara when it suffered engine failure.  Without power, the tanker was pushed by strong winds until it ran aground just short of the shoreline.

Authorities were alerted and dispatched two tugs to the scene.  The tugs were able to refloat the Aster Alvar and took the tanker under tow to a nearby shipyard.  The Aster Alvar was later inspected for damage. Reports state no injuries, damage or pollution released.

On March 7, the 30 meter long tanker Izmail 2 caught fire in the Sea of Marmara off Hereke, Turkey. The three crew on board sent out a distress call and requested assistance. The Turkish authorities dispatched the patrol boat Kiyem 2 along with a tugboat to the scene. The Kiyem 2 was able to contain the fire assisted by the tugboat a few hours later. The vessels safely evacuated all three crewmen off the Izmail 2. No reports of injuries or pollution released.
