The 24 meter long self-propelled barge Stella Maris caught fire on the IJssel at Capelle upon the IJssel, Netherlands. The fire started in the vessel’s engine room while it was proceeding to Rotterdam.  The fire quickly spread through the vessel and engulfed the wheelhouse.  A workboat pushed the Stella Maris to the shore where local fire brigade and boats extinguished the blaze.  The sole person on board was rescued without any injuries.

 

The full extent of damage to the vessel had not been reported.  The cause of the fire was under investigation.

On July 22, the 80 meter long self-propelled barge Katarina ran aground on the Danube near Straubing, Germany. The Katarina, loaded with 350 tons of sunflower seeds, was en route to Regensburg when it ran aground on a gravel bank in shallow water.  River currents swung the barge around leaving it perpendicular to the river.   Authorities were alerted and dispatched a response team to the scene.  A dredger was dispatched to the scene the next day to release the Katarina.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 160 meter long self-propelled barge Trias Obelix ran aground on the Waal River near Nijmegen, Netherlands. The Trias Obelix had struck bottom to the low water level of the river.  When the vessel attempted to free itself, the river current pulled the barge perpendicular to the river.  The crew was able to drop anchor and turn the vessel around .  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
