On January 23, the 24 meter long, 160 gt fishing vessel Northern Endurance (IMO: 9095022) ran aground in Unalaska Bay near Priest Rock, Unalaska, Alaska. The fishing vessel ended up partially beached until the following morning until salvagers were able to pull it free.  There were no reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident. Reports state the vessel may have gone aground due to various reasons, but the cause had not yet been disclosed.

On January 27, the 23.4 meter long, 80 ton dhoni Leo Wing ran aground in the Indian Ocean on Ekefaru reef off Gaafu Alifu, Maldives. The Leo Wing was proceeding to Nilandhoo and Dhaandhoo with Ramadan gifts including over 1000 gunny bags of rice, flour and sugar when it ran aground the reef.  The wooden/fiberglass vessel sustained hull damage and developed a port side list. Reports state all the cargo had fallen overboard and was lost. No reports of any injuries.

The owners of the Leo Wing have stated they plan to refloat the vessel.

On the early morning of January 16, the 148 meter long, 13684 dwt container ship Eco Levant (IMO:9985954) ran aground on the Kiel Canal near Rüstersbergen, Germany. The Eco Levant was proceeding on the canal from Antwerp in dense fog when it suffered a mechanical breakdown and engine failure.  Unable to steer, the boxship drifted until it was stuck on the northern embankment.  Authorities dispatched the tugs Holtenau (IMO: 8200321) and Fairplay 66 (IMO: 9036258) to assist. The tugs pulled the Eco Levant off the embankment and towed it Osterrönfeld.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The water police has launched an investigation into the incident.
