On the afternoon of October 16, the 28 meter long fishing vessel Noruego (IMO: 8649486) caught fire in the South Atlantic off Angola. The fire started at the stern of the trawler and quickly spread through the superstructure. The four crew were unable to extinguish the blaze as flames reached meters high and smoke could be seen from miles away. Many local vessels came to the aid of the Noruego, but they were unable to extinguish the fire.  Reports state the 4 crew were rescued. One crew member suffered burns and a broken leg during the incident.

Reports state the Noruego burned to the the waters edge. The Noruego was built in 2003 in Norway. The vessel had been recently converted from fishing swordfish to octopus.

On the evening of September 14, the 229 meter long, 82165 dwt bulk carrier Shandong Xin Ze (IMO: 1026570) ran aground in the South Atlantic Ocean off  the coast of São Paulo, Brazil. The Shandong Xin Ze had suffered a power blackout while entering the port of Santos with its cargo of fertilizers. Unable to restore power, the bulk carrier drifted out of the channel and ran aground.  Traffic was temporarily halted for several hours while 2 tugs assisted Shandong Xin Ze to anchor outside the channel to avoid running into shallow waters. There were no reports of injuries, damage or pollution released. Port authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

Verdel

On the afternoon of September 3, the 74 meter long, 1400 dwt fishing vessel Verdel (IMO: 8512657) caught fire in the South Atlantic Ocean at Mar del Plata, Argentina. Nearby witnesses spotted smoke billowing from the Verdel and attempted to spray water into the vessel. The local fire brigade was alerted and arrived on scene a short time later.

The fire fighters boarded the Verdel and found the source of the fire.  The fire was coming from the starboard bow and had spread through multiple compartments and passageway to the main deck. It would take several hours of intense work  before the fire fighters extinguished the blaze.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the possible cause of the fire. No reports of injuries.
