The 97 meter long, 6948 dwt cargo vessel Xin Dong Yuan sank in the Taiwan Strait off Pintang Island, China. The Xing Dong Yuan had collided with another cargo vessel and quickly sank. Authorities were alerted and a search and rescue operation was deployed. Over 20 vessels and aircraft searched for the 14 crew of the Xing Dong Yuan.  Four crew were rescued and four bodies were recovered. The name of the second vessel in the collision was not disclosed.

The 40 meter long high speed catamaran ferry KAI Shiuan No. 3 ran aground in the Taiwan Straits off Taiwan. The ferry was en route from Penghu Island to Dongshi, Chiayi, Taiwan with 346 passengers when it suffered engine failure.  The catamaran went adrift until it ran aground some 8 miles off Taiwan. The vessel sustained hull damage and suffered water ingress. The crew sent out a distress call with the Taiwan Coast Guard responding.

The Coast Guard dispatched four rescue boats to the scene assisted by another passenger ship.  Rescuers evacuated all 346 passengers off the KAI Shiuan No. 3.  No reports of injuries. Reports state the passengers were calm and there was no panic on board, but several passengers stated they were nervous. No further details reported on the status of the KAI Shiuan No. 3.

The 145 meter long container ship Chang Rong 8 ran aground in the Taiwan Strait off Dongjia Island, Fuzhou, China. The Chang Rong 8 was headed to Haikou from Rizhao when it suffered engine failure. The boxship drifted onto shallow waters and ran up on the rocks. The Chang Rong 8 sustained hull damage with multiple breaches in the engine room. The crew tried in vain to control the water ingress, but the compartment flooded. Local authorities were alerted and dispatched a rescue ship to the scene. Seven of the 16 crew were evacuated while the remaining crew stayed on board to assist in salvage efforts. No reports of injuries.  Authorities later reported of some oily water released around the vessel.
