Collision off Taiwan Strait

The 16 meter long fishing vessel Min Shi Yu 06867 collided with the 96 meter tanker Hu You 8 in the Taiwan Strait near Quanzhou, China. The tanker and fishing vessel collided head-on with both vessels suffering damage. The tanker’s hull was breached at the bow and a portside tank while the Min Shi Yu 06867 suffered damage to its bow.  Reports state the Hu You 8 suffered water ingress and developed a list, but was later stablized.  Some of the 2976 tons of gasoline cargo was released into the sea.  One crewman on the fishing vessel was injured in the collision and required hospitalization. The Hu You 8 was escorted to Meizhou Bay where it anchored.

On September 19, the 149 meter long bulk carrier Grace Mariner became disabled during a heavy storm in the Taiwan Strait.  The vessel was between Zhejiang and Fujian provinces when it suffered a mechanical failure and went adrift. The crew requested assistance with the Chinese Authorities dispatching a rescue vessel to the scene. The rescue vessel East Sea Rescue 116 arrived on scene and took the Grace Mariner under tow.  The vessels proceeded to Xiamen to an anchorage.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.

The 93 meter long, 2980 dwt LPG tanker Oberon ran aground in the Taiwan Strait in Penghu, Taiwan.   The Oberon was proceeding to Maptaphut from Taiphung with 1,000 tons of liquified petroleum gas when it was driven onto a reef by high winds and five meter high waves.  The master contacted the Taiwan Coast Guard for assistance.   The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter who winched all 16 crew to safety.   The vessel hull was ruptured and the cargo of butane.  Reports state that a slick has formed around the vessel and has drifted some five kilometers.   Authorities has dispatched a response team to contain the pollution.    One report states the tanker may breakup before any salvage can be done.
