The abandoned 26 ton fishing vessel Cheng Tsai Li was discovered by the Japanese Coast Guard off the Miyako Island. The fishing vessel was found partially burnt along with a significant list as the hull had suffered water ingress. The Coast Guard search the vessel and found no one on board.  Rescue boats from Japan and Taiwan started a search for survivors.  One crewman was later rescued from the sea by another fishing boat.  He was taken to hospital suffering from hypothermia and from injuries from shark bites. The other four crewmen are still reported as missing.  The cause of the incident was not clear, but the crewman stated the vessel had caught fire forcing the crew to abandoned ship.

On October 15, the 96 meter long, 11628 dwt tanker Yong Win 3 capsized and sank off Little Liouchiou, Taiwan.   The tanker was carrying more than 5,000 tons of diesel fuel when the vessel developed a heavy list.  The crew sealed the tanker’s oil storage compartments before abandoning ship. A rescue boat was able to safely rescue all the crew.  No injuries were reported.  The Coast Guard stated that no major pollution has been spotted and patrol craft remain at the scene to monitor the situation. The cause of the heavy list was not known.

The 100 meter long, 7716 dwt freighter New Lucky III became disabled near Bail, Taiwan.   The freighter was battered by high winds and rough seas when it developed a dangerous list.   The cargo of logs on board had shifted causing the New Lucky III to become unmanageable.  The vessel quickly lost power and the list continued to increase. The New Lucky III sent out a distress call with the Taiwan National Search and Rescue Command responding.  Aircraft and rescue boats were quickly dispatched to the scene.   A helicopter rescued seven crew men while another nine men were rescued by a Coast Guard vessel.   The master of the New Lucky III was listed as missing when he was swept overboard during the rescue operations.   The last report stated the New Lucky III was still adrift.
