RP Rheinfelden

The 110 meter long self-propelled tanker-barge RP Rheinfelden went aground on the Rhine River near Geisenheim, Germany.  The Rheinfelden was proceeding in dense fog when another vessel appeared.  The tanker-barge veered to avoid collision, but went aground.  The RP Rheinfelden was later released with the aid of a tug with minor damage.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.  The Rheinfelden proceeded to Birsfelden, Switzerland with its cargo of 800 tons of gasoline.

Collision near Bruinisse

A tanker barge and freighter collided near the locks at Bruinisse, Netherlands (51.66 N, 4.15 E).   The tanker barge being pushed by a towboat when it struck the starboard side of the freighter.    The tanker barge took a large dent while the freighter’s hull was holed above the waterline.  The water police are conducting an investigation into the incident.  Initial reports state there was some miscomunication between the vessels before the collision.   There were no injuries on either vessel.

Tanker Barge Aground off Dillingham

The tanker barge Na-Kao went aground in Nushagak Bay off Dillingham, Alaska.   The tug Seneca who was towing the Na-Kao had become entangled with a gill net in its starboard prop disabling the tug.   The Na-Kao was loaded with 249,958 gallons of jet fuel, 349,958 gallons of gasoline and 612,238 gallons of diesel fuel.    The Coast Guard was alerted, but the owners were able to refloat the Na-Kao later the same day by transferring some fuel to another barge.  No pollution was released.
