Frankenland

The 110 meter long tanker-barge Frankenland allided with a train bridge on the Main River near Hanau, Germany.   The vessel was heading downstream when it had not  lowered the wheelhouse enough to clear the bridge.  Reports state the water level was an additional 2.5 meters above normal reducing the clearance further.   The Frankenland became stuck with the wheelhouse crushed.  Traffic on the bridge was stopped for several hours so it could be inspected, but no significant damage was found.   No reports of injuries or pollution being released.     The water police has stated this incident was due to human error.

The 105 meter long tanker-barge Jessica released pollution into the Rhine-Herne Canal.   Authorities were alerted to a 15 kilometer long oil spill in the waterway.   The authorities discovered the Jessica was the vessel releasing the oil and detained the vessel at Oberhausen.   An estimated 100 litres of diesel had leaked through a damage vent.   The canal was closed a short time to allow recovery, but the diesel had disappated too much to be removed from the waterway.  No reports of injuries.  No reports if the vessel or master was fined.

Rhine Collision

The 110 meter long tanker-barge Palandiel collided with the 110 meter long self-propelled barge Eleonora on the Rhine River near Wiesbaden-Biebrich, Germany.   The two vessels were proceeding in dense fog when they struck head-on.   Both vessels suffered damage to each bow, but no water ingress.   Both vessels were proceeding in ballast only and there was no pollution released.   No injuries reported.   The water police has started an investigation into the incident.   Both vessels were equipped with radar so the cause of the collision has yet to be determined.
