On the morning of December 3, the 274 meter long, 156620 dwt tanker Gloria Maris (IMO:9899997) collided with the 400 meter long, 229039 dwt container ship HMM St Petersburg (IMO: 9868364) in the Strait of Gibraltar some 9 nautical miles off Algeciras, Spain. The Gloria Maris departed from Cartagena with 25 crew in ballast struck the HMM St Petersburg which was headed to Algeciras with 24 crew on board. The bow of the Gloria Maris sustained hull damage while the HMM St Petersburg port side hull was holed, but there were no injuries or pollution released.

Authorities have detained both vessel until they could be inspected for seaworthiness and an investigation could be done into the incident.

On November 30, the 67 meter long, 2103 dwt tanker Brisen (IMO: 9970595) ran aground in the Baltic Sea near Sandhamn, Sweden. The Brisen was en route to Stockholm from Karlskrona with a cargo of bunker oil when it grounded and sustained hull damage. Authorities found the vessel had sustained several holes in the vessel’s ballast tanks. The tanker would be refloated the next day and proceeded to Stockholm. No reports of injuries or pollution released.

Authorities launched an investigation into the incident. Reports state the Brisen did not have a pilot on board at the time of the grounding.

On the night of November 17, the 114 meter long, 4607 dwt tanker Nazan (IMO: 9373747) became disabled on the Bosphorus off the coast of Kandilli, Turkey. The Nazan was en route to Kocaeli from Russia when it suffered rudder failure. The tanker requested help with authorities dispatching tugs to assist. The tugs Kurtarma-7 and Kurtarma-9 arrived on scene and took the Nazan under tow. The vessels proceeded safely to an anchorage off Ahırkapı. No reports of injuries, damage or pollution released.
