The 101 meter long, 6275 dwt chemical tanker Tibil suffered an explosion while in the Marmara Sea off Tuzia, Turkey.  The vessel was travelling to Tuzia in ballast when there was an explosion in one of the tanks.  Four crewmen injured and one perished in the explosion.  The vessel suffered minor water ingress and developed a list.   All the crew evacuated, but two crew later returned to take part in salvage operations.   The vessel was reported to be later towed to a shipyard in Tuzia.

The Halifax Shipping News Reports…

A fire occurred on the AlgoNova 9am this morning, 83km North of Gaspe. JRCC Dispatched a helo  and a C-130 from Greenwood, to the Honuedo Straight. AlgoNova departed Halifax on Friday. Another Commercial Vessel and a CCGS Ship were also standing by to render assistance.

A later report stated the crew of the AlgoNova was able to extinguish the fire while the vessel was in the Honguedo Strait.  No reports of injuries or pollution released.  The 130 meter long tanker was left Halifax en route to Quebec.  The cause of the fire was not reported.

HELLESPONT_CHARGER

 

The 144 meter long, 11551 dwt oil tanker Hellespont Charger became disabled off Loop Head, Ireland.  The tanker, loaded with 15,000 tons of caustic soda, had suffered a power blackout after the vessel had its main engine failure. The Hellespont Charger reported it was in force 7 winds and in six meter swells, but was in no risk.  The vessel was 100 miles west of the coast, but it was being driven towards the Irish coast.  The crew requested assistance from the Irish Coast Guard.  The Irish Coast Guard plans to fly out spare parts to the Hellespont Charger. A tug was also dispatched to assist the tanker as well.  No reports of injuries to the 22 crew on board.
