On January 16, the 98 foot long, 368 gt tugboat JMS Delta capsized and sank on the Yangtze River off Taizhou City, Jiangsu, China. The tugboat was undergoing sea trials and had just completed a test of the main engine when it suddenly lost stability. Water quickly flooded the vessel as it capsized.  A search and rescue mission search the scene, but was impeded by the swift currents and low temperatures.  Only 3 of the 25 persons on board were rescued. One survived by holding onto a hydraulic pump when the tug capsized. Authorities were able to raise the tugboat two days later. Authorities stated the vessel had be undergoing trials without notifying and reporting the condition of the tugboat. Reports have listed the vessel as both the JMS Delta and as the Wanshenzhou 67.

The 95 foot long tugboat Nalani sank off Barbers Point Harbor, Ohau, Hawaii.  The tugboat had suffered water ingress and began to sink. The crew sent out a distress call with the Coast Guard and local vessels responding.  The 11 crew were safely rescued by two vessels that arrived on scene.  No reports of injuries. The Nalani sank in 2,200 feet of water with 75,000 gallons of diesel fuel on board. An one mile long sheen was spotted on the ocean.  The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

The 40 meter long tugboat Chaulk Determination sank on the St. Lawrence River at Port of Trois-Rivières, Quebec. The tug had been docked for several months before the winter lay up when a pipe burst in the engine room.  The vessel quickly filled and sank at the dock. Booms were placed around the submerged vessel as diesel fuel was released into the water.  Reports state the Chaulk Determination had some 22 tons of fuel on board at the time of the sinking. Authorities had alerted the tug owners multiple times that the vessel’s condition required attention before the incident. No reports of injuries.
