The 37 meter long tug Cavalier XV sank on the Paraná River near San Cosme y Damián, Paraguay.  The area was struck by a strong storm with large swells causing water ingress.  The Cavalier XV’s engine room flooded and partially sank leaving only part of the superstructure above water.  No reports of injuries. Authorities state there is some oil sheen around the wreck.

The 44 meter long, 661 dwt towboat Defiance and the 186 meter long, 42,800 dwt barge Ashtabula ran aground in the Straits of Mackinaw in the Round Island Passage between Mackinac Island and Round Island, Michigan.  The vessels departed from Cedarville bound for Buffington, Indiana when the vessels had run aground and became stuck on the clay bottom.  The vessels remained stuck for several hours until currents pulled the tug/barge vessels free.

The Coast Guard conducted a flyover the vessels and found no pollution had been released.  The vessels proceeded to an anchorage after the grounding.  No reports of injuries or pollution released. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the incident.

Squall

The 40 meter long tugboat Squall sank south of the Kerch Strait near the Crimean Peninsula. The tug had suffered steering failure in heavy seas allowing water ingress.  The seven crew abandoned ship into the vessel’s life raft before the Squall sank.  Authorities were alerted and dispatched several vessels to the scene. A cargo vessel came upon the life raft and rescued all seven crew of the Squall.  No reports of injuries.
