Yukka

Yukka

 

The 107 meter long, 3353 dwt freighter Yukka caught fire in the Black Sea near Cide, Turkey.  The Yukka was headed to Rostov-on-Don, Russia from Instanbul with a cargo of feldspar when a fire started from an electrical short  in the crew’s cabin.  The flames quickly engulfed the cabins as the crew struggled to get the fire under control.   The Yukka contacted the Turkish Coast Guard who dispatched a rescue boat to the scene.  The rescue boat evacuated the 13 persons on board the Yukka and taken to Inebolu.  Two officers were slightly injured in the fire and were taken to hospital.   The Coast Guard has alerted other vessels that the Yukka remains adrift.  The fate of the Yukka is unknown as conflicting reports state that the fire was brought under control while others state the vessel remains on fire.

Didim Mavisi

The 30 meter long passenger vessel Didim Mavisi caught fire in the Aegean Sea near Sarımsaklı’dan, Turkey.  The fire started in the galley when the crew was preparing to cook fish for lunch.   The fire quickly spread from the galley until the whole vessel was engulf in flames.   The master of the vessel proceeded back towards shore to a nearby cove.  There the vessel dropped anchor where local boats came out to rescue.  The boats rescued the majority of people, but some passengers decided to jump into the sea and swim ashore.   No reported injuries to the 100 passengers on board or crew.   The Didim Mavisi later burned to the waters edge.
