Zorbey

The 114 meter long, 2778 dwt freighter Zorbey went aground off the coast of Demre, Turkey.  The Zorbey, loaded with 3,000 tons of wheat, suffered damage in its engine room and water ingress.   The master contacted the Coast Guard stating the Zorbey was in danger of sinking.   The Coast Guard dispatched vessels to the scene and took seven crew off the Zorbey.  The other crew remained on board and attempted to dewater the vessel.  Reports state that 25 tons of diesel fuel leaked from the vessel into the sea.   Authorities have placed booms around the Zorbey to prevent the pollution from spreading.  No reports of  injuries of the 15 crew.  Authorities are providing support to help refloat the freighter.

Lisa Disabled

The 110 meter long, 4179 dwt freighter Lisa became disabled while crossing the Bosphorus Strait.  The Lisa contacted Traffic Control Center who dispatched a tug to the scene.  The freighter was taken under tow to Gebze.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Five Aground At Istanbul

Five freighters went ashore or aground in Istanbul after a night of winds reaching up to force 8 (62 to 74 km/h).  The freighter Kumdas 2 (72 meter long, 2008 dwt) dragged its anchor and went ashore.  The freighter Enko (93 meter long, 3850 dwt) also dragged its anchor and went ashore.   The Enko collided with the Kumdas with both vessels sustaining some damage.  The freighters Bilgili Biraderler (1503 dwt),  Ismet Atasoy (66 meter long, 1387 dwt) and Pearl (108 meter long, 7509 dwt) also went ashore.   A tour boat Titan 1 went adrift after its engine broke down in the same storm.   The tour boat with 35 passengers averted running aground onto the rocks when the vessel was taken under tow by an unspecified vessel.  No reports of injuries from any of the vessels.
