The unfinished 368 meter long, 153500 gt container ship YM Wind allided with the quay at Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The YM Wind broke its mooring  and went adrift as the super typhoon Meranti struck the area. With winds reaching 230 miles per hour, the YM Wind was swept across the harbour and struck the quay damaging its hull. The quay sustained damage with two cranes damaged and another two cranes toppled by the YM Wind’s superstructure. No reports of injuries as no one was on board the boxship at the time.  Three tugs were dispatched to secure the YM Wind against the quay before it ran aground or caused more damage. No reports of pollution released.  Reports state estimates to repair the container terminal may take up to a year to repair.

The fishing vessel Shun Tien No. 606 partially sank at its berth in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The fishing vessel was battered against the quay by the strong wind and waves from typhoon Meranti. One crewman perished of the 22 crew on board at the time of the incident. The fuel tanks on the Shun Tien No. 666 also ruptured and oil pollution was spotted around the hull. Authorities placed booms around the fishing vessels to contain any pollution released. Reports stated that many nearby fishing vessels were severely damaged by the typhoon.
