Alaca 1

The 88 meter long, 2734 dwt freighter Alaca 1 was crushed by ice in the Azov Sea near Kirillovka.   The Alaca 1 became stuck in the ice while heading to Rostov-on-Don from Kerch and requested assistance from an icebreaker.   While waiting for the icebreaker, the ice punctured the hull allowing water ingress.   The crew of 12 on board abandoned the vessel and went onto the ice.   When contact was lost with the Alaca 1, authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene.   The helicopter found the men and were able to safely rescue them.   The crew were taken to Simferopol, Ukraine.   No reports of injuries.   The Alaca 1 was lasted reported drifting with the ice.   Authorities are not certain if the freighter will roll over and sink or remain afloat.    No details about the cargo or the amount of fuel on board.

Captain Ivan Vikulov

Captain Ivan Vikulov

The 140 meter long, dwt 5885 freighter Captain Ivan Vikulov caught fire after an explosion while in the ice in the Azov Sea.   The fire quickly spread to other parts of the freighter.   The vessel sent out a distress call to the Ukraine authorities in the Crimea.  A helicopter was dispatched to the freighter.   The helicopter landed on the freighter deck and evacuated 10 of the 14 crew on board.  The icebreaker Kapitan Moshkin arrived on scene and was able to establish a towline to the freighter.   A few hours later the remaining four men on the Captain Ivan Vikulov were transferred over to the icebreaker as the fire engulfed the vessel.   The icebreaker was able to extinguish the blaze and the freighter was placed at anchor off Strilkove, Ukraine.   No reports of injuries.

Seba M

Seba M

The 130 meter long, 11680 dwt freighter Seba M went aground in the Azov Sea port of Mariupol, Ukraine.  The Seba M was entering the port and was pushed out of the navigation channel by ice.   The port tug was requested, but was unable to refloat the Seba M.  An ice breaker was dispatched but was not able to get close to the freighter due to the shallow water.  A towline was taken from the Seba M to the icebreaker and later pulled the freighter free.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.
