Rich Forest

Rich Forest

The 153 meter long, 21317 dwt bulk freighter Rich Forest became disabled in the Pacific Ocean near Guam.  The bulk carrier was en route to China from the Solomon Islands loaded with timber.  The vessel was sailing in heavy seas with 4 meter waves and 20 to 30 knot winds when it suffered a leak.   The Rich Forest suffered uncontrolled water ingress in the engine room and the vessel’s pumps were unable to keep up with the flooding.  The crew requested assistance  with two USCG cutters responding, one from Guam and the other near Saipan.  Aircraft were dispatched to the scene and four other vessels (AMVER) diverted course to aid in the rescue.  The bulk freighter C.S. Sunshine arrived on scene first and the crew of the Rich Forest abandoned ship.  All 24 crewmen from the Rich Forest were rescued by the C.S. Sunshine.  No reports of injuries.

Last report stated the Rich Forest was still slowing sinking by the stern, but was still afloat.  The vessel owner was working on establishing plans for the Rich Forest salvage.

Sea Lion

Sea Lion

The 38 foot long tugboat Sea Lion sank off Atlantic Beach, Long Island, New York.  The Sea Lion became swamped when it encountered six foot waves over its bow.  The Sea Lion was able to send out a mayday call, but the four crew on board were forced to quickly abandon ship and jump into the sea.  The Coast Guard along with other nearby vessels came to the crew’s aid.  Two crew were pulled from the water by the Coast Guard while the other two were rescued by a nearby vessel.  One crewman from the Sea Lion suffered serious injuries.   No reports of pollution released.  The Sea Lion was crossing New York Harbour at the time of the sinking.

Carolina Girl 3

Carolina Girl 3

The 73 foot long fishing vessel Carolina Girl 3 went aground near the entrance to the St. Johns River at Jacksonville, Florida.  The fishing vessel had suffered water ingress and was risk of sinking when the crew intentionally ran the vessel ashore.  The Coast Guard was contacted and dispatched a 45-foot motor lifeboat to the scene.  The lifeboat crew provided pumps which were able to de-water the vessel.  No reports of injuries.
