Manistee

The 678 foot long, 14350 dwt freighter Manistee became stuck in ice while proceeding in the Straits of Mackinac near the Mackinac Bridge.   The vessel contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched the cutter Biscayne Bay to the scene.  The cutter freed the Manistee and escorted the bulk carrier into Lake Huron.   No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.  The Coast Guard conducts ice-breaking on Lake Superior and Lake Michigan as part of Operation Taconite.   The Manistee proceeded safely on to its destination at Toledo, Ohio.

The 90 foot long ferry Huron became stuck in ice off the harbor at Mackinaw Island, Michigan.  The ferry had departed St. Ignace with 68 passengers on a regular run when it became stuck in a field of brush ice.   The ferry contacted the Coast Guard for help.  They dispatched the cutter Biscayne Bay who freed the ferry and escorted it back to St. Ignace.  Reports state the ferry are not designed to operate in ice and can easily become stuck.  No reports of injuries, damage or pollution being released.

Alaska Rescues – Part II

The 68 foot fishing vessel Heritage sank off Kodiak Island, Alaska in bad weather with 60 knots winds and 16 foot waves.  A Jayhawk helicopter was heading to rescue an earlier wreck, see Part I, when it received the distress call from the Heritage.  The helicopter proceed to the scene.   At the same time, the 37 meter long  fishing vessel Tuxedni, headed to the scene.   The Tuxedni was able to rescue five crewman while the helicopter pulled two crewman from the water.   All seven crewmen were wearing survival suits and reported to be in good condition.   The Coast Guard is conducting an investigation into the incident.
