On the morning of August 8, the 118 meter long, 7631 dwt tanker GT Unity (IMO: 9507506) caught fire in South China Sea some 104 nautical miles south-southeast of Con Dao, Vietnam. The GT Unity was en route to Dung Quat from Malaysia with a cargo of 3800 tons of crude oil when a fire started in the vessel’s engine room. The blaze was started after an electrical short and quickly grew out of control. The crew contacted Vietnam authorities which requested other nearby vessels to assist as it sent out a rescue vessel to the scene.

Initial reports stated that 16 of the 20 crew on board the GT Unity had been evacuated off the vessel. One crew member was injured and taken by a rescue vessel back to shore.  The owner of the GT Unity was asked to secure additional vessels and fire fighting equipment.

Later reports stated that all crew off the GT Unity were rescued and the fire had been extinguished.  The extent of damage of the fire was not disclosed.

On the morning of July 28, the fishing vessels CM-05006-TS and CM-05430-TS sank in the South China Sea some two nautical miles southeast of Hon Lon Island, Vietnam. Authorities were alerted that the squid boat CM-05006-TS with 5 crew had sunk after a severe thunderstorms.  Twenty minutes later authorities learn another another squid boat CM-05430-TS with 4 crew sank in the same waters.

Authorities dispatched a rescue team aided by two private vessels to the scene. All 9 crew members from both fishing vessels were rescued and brought ashore. Reports stated the crew received medical treatment, but provided no details if any crew suffered injuries. Authorities worked with local fishermen and were able to salvage both vessels.  The two fishing vessels were towed to Bai Chet for repairs.

 

 

Wonder Sea

On the afternoon of July 19, the passenger ship Wonder Sea capsized in Halong Bay near Dau Go Cave, Vietnam. The Wonder Sea was out on an excursion voyage with 53 persons on board, 48 passengers and 5 crew, when it was caught out in a storm.  Reports state the Wonder Sea lost stability in strong winds and capsized.

Vietnamese authorities were alerted with vessels from the navy, border patrol, local police and port authorities responding. Over 25 vessels were engaged in a search and rescue operation looking for survivors. Initial reports state some 11 people had been rescued from the water. Unfortunately some 34 bodies have also been recovered from the sea.

The search for the missing persons had some difficulty in the darkness and heavy rains still persist in the area. Divers continue to search the overturned Wonder Sea. The incident is under investigation.
