Innovative Yacht Sinks

The 60 meter long yacht Yogi sank in a storm off Skyros, Greece.  The yacht had suffered an engine failure when the master of the yacht sent out a distress call.   He told authorities that the vessel was taking on water and was preparing to abandon ship.   Two helicopters, a Naval vessel and several Greek Coast Guard and commercial vessels proceeded to the yacht’s location.  All eight crew on board were picked up by a helicopter and flown to safety.   There were no passengers on board at the time.  The Yogi was built in 2011 at a cost of 45.7 million dollars and was awarded as the ‘Most Innovated Yacht of 2011’.  The vessel had recently left a shipyard in Turkey heading to an unnamed port in the Mediterranean.   It is suspected a mechanical failure was the initial cause of the sinking.   Officials has stated an investigation will be conducted into the sinking.

Yacht Fuel Spill

Yacht Fuel Spill

The 72 foot long cruiser Plight went aground on the barrier reef in the North Sound, Cayman Islands.  The vessel struck the reef and quickly disintegrated releasing some 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel into the ocean.  Bad weather quickly stripped the vessel’s superstructure leaving only the engines and generators submerged on the reef.  Reports state the master of the vessel escaped to the lifeboat while the two other crewmen on board were by local authorities.  The Plight was scheduled to sail from Miami to the Australia via the Panama Canal.  The master of the yacht had headed to the Cayman Islands due to the approaching bad weather.  No reported injuries.  Authorities have deployed environmental cleanup crews to the scene.

Don’t Add Water to Cocktails…

The 100 foot long motor yacht Cocktails struck the Great Ledge off Little Harbor along Cape Cod’s southern shore.   The Cocktails was travelling from Woods Hole when it struck the rock.   The yacht began to flood as the pumps barely kept up with the water ingress.   The crew decided to beach the vessel on Nobska Beach so that temporary repairs could be made.   Upon inspection, the yacht’s hull was left with a 4 by 20 inch hole in its port side.   Salvage vessels, three patrol boats from Falmouth along with two Coast Guard vessels were at the scene.    A temporary repair was made and the yacht is to be towed to Fairhaven where it will be hauled out of the water for repairs.    No reports of injury or pollution being released.   The Cocktails usually charters between $42,500 to $45,000 per week.
